Joseph and lucy

Joseph SMITH Sr. was born July 12, 1771, in Topsfield, Massachusetts, the son of  Asael SMITH and Mary DUTY. He married Lucy MACK on January 24, 1796, in Tunbridge, Vermont. Lucy was born July 8, 1775, in Gilsum, New Hampshire, the daughter of Solomon MACK and Lydia GATES. They were the parents of 11 children (listed below in order of birth). Joseph died September 14, 1840, in Nauvoo, Illinois. Lucy died May 8, 1856, also in Nauvoo, Illinois.1

Children

Infant Child

Joseph Sr. and Lucy’s first child, an unnamed child, was born about a year after their marriage. The baby died in 1797, Tunbridge, Vermont.

Alvin Smith

Alvin, was born on February 11, 1798, in Tunbridge, Vermont.” His mother referred to him as a “youth of . . . singular goodness of disposition.” He was a great strength to his brother Joseph. He died in Palmyra, NY in 1823.

Hyrum smith

Hyrum was born in Tunbridge, VT, February 9, 1800. He was a faithful brother to Joseph, Jr. and was martyred with him at  Carthage, IL, in 1844. Hyrum married Jerusha Barden. After her death, he married Mary Fielding.

Sophronia smith

Sophronia, was born on May 16, 1803, in Tunbridge, Vermont. In 1828, she married Calvin Stoddard. They had two daughters. After his death, she married William McCleary. Sophronia is known as a faithful and caring daughter. She died in 1876 in Fountain Green, IL.

Joseph Smtih Jr.

Joseph Smith Jr. was born on December 23, 1805, in Sharon, Vermont. In 1827, Joseph married Emma Hale.
Joseph is the founding prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was martyred in 1844 in Carthage, IL.

Samuel H. Smith

Born in 1808 in Tunbridge, Vermont, Samuel became “the first person after Joseph and Oliver to receive baptism. Samuel remained faithful the rest of his life.” He married married Mary Bailey. After her death, he married Levira Clark. He died in 1844, in Nauvoo, IL.

Ephraim Smith

Ephraim Smith was born March 13, 1810. He lived only a few days before he died on March 24, 1810. The Smith family lived in Royalton, Vermont at the time.

William B. Smith

Born in 1811, in Royalton, VT, William is the eighth child of Joseph and Lucy.” He accepted his older brother Joseph’s prophetic claims and was baptized” in 1830. He died in Osterdock, Iowa, in 1893.

Katherine Smith

Born in 1813 in Lebanon, NH, Katherine is the second daughter of Joseph and Lucy. She married Wilkins Jenkins Salisbury. They had eight children. She is described as charming, pleasant, faithful and grateful. She died in Fountain Green, IL, in 1900.

don carlos smith

Don Carlos was born in 1816 in Norwich, Vermont. He is described as “good-natured, kindhearted, and affectionate.” He married Agnes Moulton Coolbirth. They had three daughters. He died in 1841 in Nauvoo, Illinois.

Lucy Smith

Lucy is the youngest of Joseph and Lucy’s children. At age 19, she married Arthur Millikin. They had nine children. She is described as tall, pleasant, faithful, and caring. She died in Colchester, IL, in 1882

Smith Family Gardens — Phase II

This Spring (2023), Phase II of the creation of the Joseph Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith Family Garden has begun. Seedlings of heirloom flowers and vegetables have been chosen and germinated. Volunteers will begin planting as the temperature warms. Plants will be arranged using the three-sister gardening method developed in the 1800s. Some of garden beds will use a rain garden elevation landscape. Vegetables were chosen based upon what was historically used by the early settlers of Nauvoo, Illinois.
